Final Project - The Shade of Night

Idea

How do you see the river at night? The night is in the shade yet is never a mere blackness. The perception of darkness is because it is wedded to the light. It is obscure to tell the invisible form of the river, but we feel it through the shimmer of its movement. This project explores the edge of perception on the water in the shade of night. Through offering entangled visual representations of shimmering while interacting with water undulation, the combined experience provides a trance of the present moment, stretching the sensibility between retinal sense and subjective perceiving.

One Line Pitch

This is an interactive installation that explores the in-between perception of the water movement in the shade of night.

Process

Idea Sketch

This project consists of a large water tank, a Kinect, a projector, and a computer running openFrameworks. A transducer is attached to the bottom of the water tank to generate vibration. The Kinect detects water wave data and sends it to openFrameworks. The projector presents visuals from the computation based on wave data back to the water surface.

It is a mainly viewing project. The audience is welcome to play with the water to introduce diverse water movements and discover how the feedback visual works.
