I want to make a vase or pot for final project, by using 4-axis and wood lathe together.

Process

This is the model found online. And got two large walnut wood for this project.

4-Axis Mill

Though I had some experience, I still ran twice to get it cut. The estimate time is 4.2h. And I couldn’t decrease more on the block setting, which wasted a lot material on the sides.

This is how it looks like after milling. There are two mid lines are obvious due to the nature of milling. Maybe it can be avoided if I repeat cut it in a 45 degree angle.

Wood Lathe

I leave some bottom for wood lathe, however, the center with nails didn’t work at all. It failed off when I started. The large turning center is too big, and the 4-jaw center is too small for my piece.

I finally figured out lathe my piece first for fitting to the 4-jaw center. But the walnut is hardwood for lathe. So I used drill press to drill a big hole. Sammy helped me to start lathe using a curved chisel. I found it takes a while to feel the blade and find the right angle.

Here’s how it come out from the lathe, it kept falling from the lathe maybe 20 times when I touched some bumpy area. Then I used Dremel to enlarge the cavity and sand it.
